How the World Cup 2026 bracket works

The 2026 World Cup is the first with 48 teams. They play in 12 groups of four — the full group-stage schedule is on the match calendar. The top two in each group advance. So do the eight best third-place teams. That makes 32 teams and a brand-new knockout round: the Round of 32.

From there the bracket is straight knockout. Sixteen matches in the Round of 32 (June 28 – July 3), eight in the Round of 16, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals, and the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19. Pairings run on adjacent winners: the winner of Match 1 plays the winner of Match 2, and that path carries all the way to the final. The semi-final losers meet in the third-place play-off on July 18.
